Apple's iPhone Fold Delayed to 2027 on Engineering Hurdles

Apple's iPhone Fold Delayed to 2027 on Engineering Hurdles
Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone now faces a potential launch slip into 2027, as engineering tests reveal persistent problems with the device's crease and durability.

Suppliers received warnings this week to pause component production for the project, codenamed V69, according to reports from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and The Information. The issues center on the folding screen's reliability under repeated use, a challenge that has plagued foldables since Samsung pioneered the category in 2019. Apple aimed for a late 2026 debut of its priciest iPhone yet, priced above $2,000, but these setbacks could push it further out.

This delay underscores Apple's cautious approach to foldables. While Samsung shipped over 10 million Galaxy Z units last year and Google gained traction with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Apple has iterated internally for years without committing. The iPhone Fold was meant to blend a tablet-like 7.8-inch inner display with iPhone compactness, targeting professionals and power users frustrated by current slab phones.

For consumers, it means waiting longer for Apple's take on the form factor—one expected to set benchmarks in build quality and software integration, much like the original iPhone did for smartphones. Competitors gain breathing room: Samsung could solidify dominance, while Huawei and others expand in premium segments.

The bigger picture reveals foldables' maturation pains. Global shipments hit 21.4 million in 2024, up 15% year-over-year, but hinge and screen failures remain common complaints. Apple's retreat signals even it struggles with the physics of ultra-thin folding glass and actuators.

Watch for Apple supplier updates in Q3. If V69 progresses to mass production trials by September, 2026 remains possible. Otherwise, 2027 becomes reality—and foldables evolve without Cupertino's influence.
