iPhone 18 Pro adds Reference Image to authenticate unaltered photos

Apple has introduced Reference Image on the iPhone 18 Pro, a feature that digitally authenticates photos taken with the device have not been altered later by AI.

Reference Image creates cryptographic proof of original captures. The system incorporates Apple Private Cloud Compute to send some details about each photo taken with the iPhone 18 Pro lenses. This process generates a cryptographic signature that verifies the image reflects its original state.

If edits have been made, users can view the digital negative original and compare the differences directly on the device.

Shared images retain authentication capabilities. Reference Image indicators appear not only on the phone that captured them. Recipients can also receive the signed images along with the reference signatures for later authentication.

Feature addresses rise of synthetic imagery. Apple positions Reference Image as its response to increasing synthetic AI-generated imagery. The technology ensures viewers know whether a photo reflects true reality or has been modified.

Availability excludes EU and China markets. Apple Reference Image will not launch in the European Union or China. No further details on the geographic restrictions were provided.

Generated images receive separate SynthID treatment. For Apple's own image generation features, including Image Playground and the new Apple Intelligence editing tools like Extend and Spatial Reframe, the output will carry SynthID markers. The announcement came during the apple-special-event-2026 live event on September 9, 2026.
