The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releases digitally on May 19 with over an hour of exclusive bonus content on its creation, cast, settings, themes, music, power-ups, and Easter eggs. Blu-ray arrives June 16. It earns $942 million at the box office, leading 2026 films, while Illumination and Nintendo plan more animated Nintendo movies.

The animated sequel based on the popular Nintendo title will reach home audiences far sooner than many expected. Less than two months after its April theatrical debut, the project from Illumination and Nintendo arrives on digital storefronts May 19, Universal announced.

Bonus Features
Purchasers gain access to more than 60 minutes of exclusive behind-the-scenes material that spotlights key contributors and production elements. The extras consist of several featurettes described as follows:

"NEXT LEVEL: MAKING THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE" follows the collaborative effort between Nintendo's game designers, Illumination's animation team, and the voice cast as they discuss the creative decisions involved in translating the cosmic adventure to the screen.

"CAST OF CHARACTERS" examines the performances that brought Mario, Luigi, Peach, Rosalina, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Toad, and Yoshi to life while respecting the franchise's history.

"EXPLORING THE GALAXY" takes viewers through memorable locations, highlighting the deliberate nostalgic touches built into each environment.

"GALACTIC THEMATICS" focuses on interpersonal dynamics, analyzing tested alliances, severed ties, and evolving relationships that form the story's heart.

"COSMIC TUNES" lets composer Brian Tyler explain his approach to adapting familiar game melodies into a sweeping orchestral soundtrack that propels the narrative.

"POWER-UPS" reviews the assortment of transformative items included, detailing the selection process and revealing which ones the actors personally favored.

"SECRETS OF THE GALAXY" points out cleverly concealed Easter eggs and offers guidance on spotting them during repeat viewings.
A physical edition targeting collectors will follow on Blu-ray June 16. Although the new release has trailed its 2023 predecessor, which surpassed $1 billion worldwide, it has earned more than $942 million to date and remains the highest-grossing film of 2026 by a substantial lead. Illumination and Nintendo reportedly plan additional entries in the animated Nintendo universe, with the next scheduled for 2028.
