AirPods Pro 3 feature a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip in the charging case, upgrading from the U1 chip in AirPods Pro 2. This enables Precision Finding in the Find My app to work from 1.5x greater distances.
Precision Finding provides step-by-step guidance to the AirPods' location. The U1 chip supports it from around 35-50 feet, but tests show the second-gen UWB chip works from 150-200 feet in real-world use, outperforming Apple's estimates.
The improved range requires an iPhone 15 or newer, which also has the upgraded UWB chip. In one instance, the feature located AirPods Pro 3 stuffed in a backpack on the opposite side of a house.
