Amazon CEO Andy Jassy used the company's third-quarter earnings call on Thursday to point to rising demand for AWS and another step up in spending next year.

AWS backlog more than doubles. Jassy said AWS has a backlog of $578 billion in contracted future revenue, more than double the level a year earlier. AWS sales grew 39% to $46.0 billion in the quarter, and Amazon has projected AWS revenue growth of over 40% in both 2027 and 2028.

More capital spending in 2027. Amazon still expects 2026 cash capital expenditures of about $220 billion, which it says primarily reflects investments in artificial intelligence. On the call, Jassy said the company expects to spend meaningfully more on capital projects in 2027.

Two trillion-dollar businesses. In the earnings release, Jassy said Amazon may have two trillion-dollar revenue businesses in the next five to 10 years. On the call, he said those are AWS and Amazon's stores business.

Amazon Leo costs. CFO Brian Olsavsky said costs for Amazon Leo, the company's satellite internet service, are weighing on the fourth-quarter profit forecast as the service prepares to launch. Amazon guided fourth-quarter operating income of $28.5 billion to $33.5 billion, compared with $25.0 billion a year earlier.
