Apple has rolled out its merchant contactless payment system in South Africa, letting businesses accept cards and digital wallets using only an iPhone and supported apps from iStore Pay or Yoco. Apple launches Tap to Pay on iPhone in South Africa. Merchants accept contactless cards, Apple Pay, and digital wallets using only their iPhone and a partner app like iStore Pay or Yoco, without extra hardware. It supports Mastercard and Visa initially. This enables businesses of all sizes to process payments easily via NFC.

Apple announced Tuesday that its contactless payment system for merchants is now live in South Africa. Retailers there can accept payments directly through an iPhone paired with a compatible iOS application from a supported provider, eliminating the need for extra equipment.

The service works for companies of all scales, handling contactless credit and debit cards along with Apple Pay and additional digital wallets. Customers simply bring their card, iPhone, Apple Watch or other compatible wallet close to the merchant's handset, completing the exchange over NFC without any dedicated payment terminal.

Local providers iStore Pay and Yoco have become the initial platforms to integrate the capability. Mastercard and Visa cards are accepted from the outset, while American Express compatibility is slated to arrive shortly.

The functionality made its debut in the United States during February 2022 and has since spread to additional territories in successive phases. A significant expansion drive throughout 2025 introduced the option in dozens of fresh locations, among them 18 countries during May, five further European nations in September, plus Singapore and Hong Kong in December. Malaysia gained access in April 2026, after which Apple stated at the beginning of this year that the total had climbed to 50 markets worldwide.

All dealings maintain strong privacy safeguards. Each exchange is encrypted and handled inside the iPhone's Secure Element. "Apple says it has no knowledge of what is purchased or who is buying it," and neither card details nor transaction records are kept on the handset or company servers.
The system is compatible with any iPhone XS or newer model that has the current iOS release installed.

Linux Foundation Debuts Akrites to Speed Up Open Source Vulnerability Fixes

The Linux Foundation launched Akrites on Thursday with 19 founding members including major tech firms and banks to organize remediation of critical open source vulnerabilities before AI-powered attackers can exploit them. The project tackles the reality that fewer than 5% of thousands of AI-identified flaws have received patches by instituting one confidential response team in place of scattered reports.

CISA gives feds until Sunday to patch exploited Cisco and PTC flaws

CISA has ordered federal agencies to patch two critical vulnerabilities in Cisco Unified Communications Manager and PTC Windchill/FlexPLM products by June 28 due to active exploitation. The move underscores the urgency of addressing known exploited flaws in widely used enterprise and industrial software.

Apple Vision Pro and Smart Glasses Chief Paul Meade Departs for OpenAI

Paul Meade, Apple’s VP in charge of Vision Pro and smart glasses development, is leaving for OpenAI’s hardware unit by next week to work on its AI-powered devices. The departure, reported June 26, 2026, continues a pattern of executives exiting Apple for AI rivals and follows a 2025 restructuring of the company’s spatial computing teams.
