Bentley Prepares Cautious Debut of Its First All-Electric SUV

Bentley will reveal its first battery-electric SUV, the Torcal, on September 23, 2026, in London while deliberately stressing heritage over the powertrain. The launch occurs amid a steep drop in luxury EV interest that has already forced rivals to cut or postpone programs and prompted Bentley to delay full electrification until 2035.

Bentley Prepares Cautious Debut of Its First All-Electric SUV

Bentley will unveil its first all-electric SUV, the Torcal, on September 23, 2026. The vehicle uses the Volkswagen Group's electric platform and offers about 480 kilometers of range. The company downplays the electric aspects in its messaging amid falling demand for luxury electric vehicles, which has prompted Bentley to delay its full shift to battery power until 2035.

After 107 years of selling only combustion-engine vehicles, Bentley will present its first fully electric model on September 23, 2026, in London. The new Torcal SUV joins the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga as the fourth vehicle in the range, yet the British marque reportedly focuses its messaging on craftsmanship, brand heritage and the vehicle’s name while almost never highlighting the electric powertrain.
Design director Robin Page told Autocar that clientele consider 480 to 560 kilometers adequate, beyond which “they will take the private jet.”
Bentley treads carefully on electric references. The name Torcal draws from El Torcal de Antequera, a limestone-rock landscape in Andalusia, southern Spain, and also alludes to the Latin root “torquere,” source of the French word for “couple” that denotes the propulsive torque. Engineers placed the SUV on the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric architecture, the same base that will carry the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric. Measuring under five meters long, the Torcal sits below the Bentayga in size; the interior keeps a central touchscreen but relies mainly on physical switches instead of an all-screen layout.

Range falls short of platform sibling. Bentley cites approximately 480 kilometers of range. Design director Robin Page told Autocar that clientele consider 480 to 560 kilometers adequate, beyond which “they will take the private jet.” By comparison, the Porsche Cayenne Electric sharing the platform is targeting closer to 600 kilometers. Power and price details remain undisclosed, although the Torcal is expected to gain around 160 kilometers in seven minutes via fast charging.
The Torcal therefore serves as a low-risk probe of Bentley’s traditional customers’ readiness for full electrification while the company retains familiar styling cues.
Luxury EV demand slump drives caution. High-end electric-vehicle sales have fallen sharply. Audi ended Q8 e-tron output ahead of schedule, Lamborghini delayed its Lanzador for lack of buyers, and Porsche booked a €3.9 billion impairment in 2025 tied to its electric plans, slashing operating profit by nearly 98 percent. In response, Bentley moved its complete shift to battery power from 2030 to 2035.
The Torcal therefore serves as a low-risk probe of Bentley’s traditional customers’ readiness for full electrification while the company retains familiar styling cues.
