Bouygues Telecom Becomes First French Operator to Finish Full XGS-PON Deployment

Bouygues Telecom has completed XGS-PON fiber deployment across its entire network, positioning the operator as the first in France to enable symmetrical 8 Gb/s speeds for all subscribers. The upgrade, which quadruples prior GPON performance, helps prepare French broadband infrastructure for continued growth in data demand.

Bouygues Telecom Becomes First French Operator to Finish Full XGS-PON Deployment

Bouygues Telecom finishes full XGS-PON deployment across its network this week after starting in summer 2023. The move makes every residential and business subscriber eligible for maximum symmetrical speeds of 8 Gb/s. XGS-PON delivers four times the speed of earlier GPON standards. This upgrade helps prepare French networks for sharply rising data use in coming years.

Bouygues Telecom has finished rolling out XGS-PON fiber technology throughout its network. The milestone makes every internet subscriber eligible for the maximum residential speeds of symmetrical 8 Gb/s.

Bouygues finishes XGS-PON deployment this week. The operator began the XGS-PON rollout in summer 2023 and wrapped it up this week, according to statements given to Clubic. Both residential and business customers at Bouygues Telecom and B&YOU can now reach up to 8 Gb/s downstream and upstream through offerings that include the Bbox Ultym and Pure Fibre Plus plans.
Symmetrical 8 Gb/s may appear excessive for typical activities including streaming, cloud gaming, video calls and large file transfers.
XGS-PON delivers four times the speed of prior GPON. The technology represents an advance over GPON, which provided theoretical speeds reaching 2.5 Gb/s downstream and 1.25 Gb/s upstream. XGS-PON supports theoretical symmetrical rates of 10 Gb/s. SFR introduced the standard in France during 2022, with Bouygues Telecom and Orange adopting it the following year.

Orange reportedly targets full deployment of the standard across its fiber network in 2026. Free has charted its own course since 2019 with the 10G-EPON standard that enjoys wide use in Asian and American markets yet operates with a lower split ratio.

Free uses 10G-EPON while others deploy XGS-PON. One 10G-EPON fiber line at Free serves 32 subscribers. By comparison, a single XGS-PON fiber can be shared by up to 64 subscribers, matching the earlier GPON split ratio while transmitting data four times faster.
Data consumption has grown sharply in recent years, so internet service providers are future-proofing infrastructure to meet tomorrow’s requirements.
Customers experience the improvement only through wired connections and reduced latency when using a compatible router.

Higher speeds prepare networks for rising data use. Symmetrical 8 Gb/s may appear excessive for typical activities including streaming, cloud gaming, video calls and large file transfers. Data consumption has grown sharply in recent years, so internet service providers are future-proofing infrastructure to meet tomorrow’s requirements. French operators have already begun testing 50G-PON and 100G-PON standards.
Orange aims to complete its own XGS-PON rollout by 2026.

Microsoft assigns 6,000 workers and $2.5 billion to new AI client deployment subsidiary

Microsoft is committing $2.5 billion and reassigning 6,000 employees to its new Microsoft Frontier Co. subsidiary to help clients deploy artificial intelligence. The announcement follows similar forward deployed engineering initiatives launched this year by Amazon, Anthropic and OpenAI.

Tesla Q2 deliveries top forecasts with 25% jump to 480,126

Tesla reported 480,126 vehicle deliveries in Q2 2026, exceeding analyst expectations of roughly 406,600 and marking a 25% jump from the prior year. The results signal a potential rebound for the automaker after consecutive annual sales declines driven by consumer backlash, lost tax credits, and rising competition.

Europe's Highest Court Rejects Google's Appeal of $4.7 Billion Antitrust Penalty

Europe's top court upheld an approximately $4.7 billion antitrust penalty targeting Google for allegedly abusing Android's dominance through pre-installation deals with device makers. The ruling ends years of appeals, follows a reduction by a lower court, and comes as the EU expands oversight of large technology platforms under new rules while drawing criticism from U.S. officials.
