Bungie Ends Active Development on Destiny 2
Bungie will end active development on Destiny 2 as of June 9 after nearly a decade of support, leaving the game online without further updates. The shift follows plummeting player counts, ongoing struggles with Marathon, and Sony writing off more than $750 million from its $3.6 billion acquisition.

The title became a PlayStation 5 first-party game after Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022. That deal made the developer central to Sony’s live-service plans. Bungie is now moving away from the game that defined much of its recent work.
The Washington-based studio will now focus on new beginnings and incubating its next projects. It is unclear whether this includes Destiny 3 or something entirely new. The decision marks a major shift for the developer.
The Final Shape expansion in 2024 wrapped up Destiny 2’s storyline. Last year’s Star Wars-themed Renegades expansion followed. Player numbers have dropped sharply since then.
Bungie has turned to Marathon in the meantime. That game has struggled to build a large audience despite positive reviews. The challenges have affected the studio’s position under Sony, which acquired Bungie to lead its live-service push and has since written off over $750 million of the studio’s value.

The Circuitry is a passion project I've always wanted to build, and I love the work behind it.
Running it costs real money. APIs, hosting, time. To keep improving the site and growing this into something useful for everyone, those costs have to be covered.
