Anthropic's Claude service is down worldwide due to authentication system failures affecting multiple products. More than 1,500 reports appeared on Downdetector within minutes on September 29.
When queried, Claude fails to respond and instead shows the message "Temporarily unable to authenticate."
The outage began hours after the release of Claude Sonnet 5.5, noted for its performance-to-price ratio.

Anthropic's Claude chatbot suffered a widespread outage on June 23, 2026 that affected the chat interface and Claude Code before being fixed within the hour. The incident highlights recurring instability for the AI service this month.
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, its cheapest and fastest small model, at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Anthropic says it costs around 75% less to run than Haiku 4.5 on average and scores far higher on its benchmarks.
Anthropic introduced Claude Sonnet 5.5 at unchanged mid-tier rates of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. The model exceeded Opus 5.5 on Terminal-Bench 4.0 yet consumed more tokens at peak effort settings.
Anthropic says early estimates show its new anti-distillation defenses cut the data distillers harvest from Claude by about 90-99%. It has banned tens of thousands of accounts, but says it doesn't know how long the gains will last.
