Plans for the series had been canceled previously. Insider Gaming reported in September that the original plans for a Fight Night return had been canceled roughly a year earlier.

The franchise has seen repeated on-and-off development. Discussions or work on a new Fight Night title have occurred intermittently for nearly a decade, according to Insider Gaming. EA has directed its focus toward its UFC series, which uses technology expected to support any future boxing game.

Similar announcements have occurred before. EA previously announced returns for College Football and College Basketball without further details at the time. The College Basketball project ultimately did not release after the company failed to secure exclusive agreements with participating schools.
