Meta's Muse Image AI Uses Public Instagram Photos by Default
TL;DRAI · 60 sec read

Meta rolled out Muse Image AI that pulls from public Instagram photos and reels by default for non-private accounts. No notifications are sent when content is reused. Users must manually disable the option in settings under Sharing and Reuse for posts and reels. The tool will expand to Facebook and Messenger soon.

Meta has rolled out a new AI image generation model called Muse Image that can pull from public Instagram posts and reels, with the feature enabled by default for non-private accounts.

Public Instagram accounts are opted in automatically. Anyone with a public Instagram profile has a setting turned on that allows others to generate AI content using their images and videos on Meta AI. The option supports Muse Image, which is now rolling out across Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Meta AI app.

Users can @-mention Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to incorporate specific public profiles into generated images. Meta's description states this enables designing custom event invitations, mocking up collaborative creative concepts, or generating personalized graphics by tagging a username.

No notifications are sent when content is reused. An Instagram help page confirms that content from public accounts can be used for AI features at Meta. Account holders do not receive alerts if someone creates an AI image from their reels, feed videos, or photos shared after the reuse option became available.

The same help page notes that public content can also be reused in features like remix, sequence, templates, and stickers. Private Instagram profiles are excluded from Muse Image entirely.

Users can disable the AI reuse permission. Meta provides a toggle in Instagram app settings under Sharing and Reuse. Users must turn off both "Posts" and "Reels" under the heading "Allow people to create with and reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta."

The opt-out may not appear immediately because Muse Image and the toggle are still rolling out. Any AI content created before the setting is disabled is not deleted.
Expansion plans include more platforms and use cases. Meta plans to bring Muse Image to Facebook and Messenger soon. Advertisers and agencies will gain access to the tool for content creation in the coming weeks. The company is also developing a Muse Video feature.
