U.S. stocks closed lower on Thursday, Oct. 29, as a steep drop in Alphabet shares weighed on technology names and ended a three-day winning streak for the S&P 500.

How the indexes closed

The Nasdaq Composite fell 365.13 points, or 1.38%, to 26,184.72. The S&P 500 slipped 23.59 points, or 0.3%, to 7,720.39, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 132.54 points, or 0.25%, to 52,342.56, according to CNBC and the Associated Press.

The losses were concentrated in big names. About 80% of S&P 500 stocks closed higher and nine of the index's 11 sectors gained, MarketWatch reported.

Alphabet leads the decline

Alphabet shares fell 12% after the Google parent missed analyst expectations for third-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings per share, CNBC reported. The company posted negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion and kept its full-year capital spending forecast at $195 billion to $205 billion.

Other movers

Caterpillar fell more than 9% after the industrial company stuck with its annual sales forecast, Reuters reported. Eli Lilly rose to a record after strong third-quarter sales of its GLP-1 drugs and a raised full-year outlook.

On the economic front, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge showed the personal consumption expenditures price index rose 3.6% from a year earlier in September, Yahoo Finance reported. The data came a day after the Fed held rates at 3.75% to 4% with two officials voting for a hike.
