OpenAI Upgrades ChatGPT Memory, Extends to Free Users

OpenAI has released new details on how ChatGPT’s memory feature is getting smarter and coming to free users for the first time. The memory feature allows ChatGPT to learn about users and remember their preferences over time, giving useful context for natural interactions that do not need to start from scratch each time.

Memory synthesis system sees major improvements. Today OpenAI is beginning to roll out a more capable and scalable system for synthesizing memory. It was developed to tackle the staleness, correctness, and scalability challenges observed when memory is applied to hundreds of millions of users and multi-year time horizons in ChatGPT.

The company is launching a significantly more capable and compute-efficient memory architecture built on top of dreaming. The dreaming feature that helps fill in the blanks around memories automatically is getting an upgrade.

Users gain access to memory summary page. The memories synthesized by dreaming are reviewable through a summary of them made visible in the memory summary page. From the memory summary, users can quickly glean the highlights of what ChatGPT knows about them, add or update information about themselves, and provide instructions on what topics ChatGPT should bring up and when.

If users want to drill down into a particular area to learn more, they just chat with the model.

Improvements center on three specific areas. OpenAI's detailed blog post includes a collection of examples that show the improvements they aim to achieve. The three areas of focus are carrying forward useful context, following preferences and constraints, and staying current with the passage of time.

Upgraded system arrives for Plus and Pro users. Plus and Pro users in the US will start seeing the upgraded memory system starting today. The company is also doubling the capacity for memory storage.

Context carrying research now rolls out. OpenAI has been researching new ways for ChatGPT memory to carry context across conversations and keep it useful over time. Today that work is rolling out as a more capable memory system in ChatGPT.
