The first close is expected to fall short of the new goal. According to the FT, OpenAI set a Friday deadline for commitments, and the first close is expected to raise less than $20 billion after some investors reduced their allocations. CNBC confirmed on October 31 that OpenAI is seeking up to $20 billion and said the round is still open, so the figures could change.

OpenAI did not respond to requests for comment and has not confirmed the figures. Its last closed valuation was $852 billion, set in March.
