Versions 4.7 through 7.1.3 are affected. According to NVD, the bug comes from predictable, web-accessible staging paths used during full-package core upgrades, which let unauthenticated attackers execute code on the server during the upgrade window. CISA classifies it as a time-of-check time-of-use race condition (CWE-367). Wordfence, the CVE numbering authority, rates it 8.1 (High) under CVSS 3.1.

WordPress 7.1.4 fixes it. The October 28 security release lists a weakness in the upgrade process that can lead to remote code execution during the upgrade window, credited to Umut Bayram. WordPress says the fixes are being backported to all branches still eligible for security fixes, back to 4.7, and will ship as they become ready.
