A YouTuber spots expiration dates on digital PlayStation games, sparking fears of regular online checks like Xbox One's DRM. Sony confirms a one-time online authentication converts temporary licenses to permanent ones, after which no further checks are required. This eases access concerns and likely combats fraud such as refund scams.

A YouTuber named Modded Hardware spotted a new expiration date on digital PlayStation games over the weekend, sparking fears of regular online checks needed to access purchases.

Confusion spread, evoking memories of Xbox One's failed digital DRM plans. Sony responded with an official statement to GameSpot.

"Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual," a company spokesperson said. "A one-time online check is required to confirm the game's license, after which no further check-ins are required."

New digital purchases carry a temporary license that converts to permanent after authentication, according to reports. DoesItPlay owner Clemens Istel suggests the change combats fraud, possibly tied to refund scams or a Star Wars Racer exploit.
Sony's statement does not address this speculation but confirms the addition of at least one new online check layer.

Bungie Begins Layoffs After Destiny 2's Final Update

Bungie has started laying off staff after Destiny 2's final update. The studio cited an internal reorganization and said it could not sustain its former size despite continued Marathon support through at least the end of 2026. Future projects remain in early incubation.

Sony sells region-locked PS5 at a loss to expand its Japanese audience

Sony Interactive Entertainment is selling its region-locked PS5 at a loss as a strategic investment to grow PlayStation users in Japan and curb imports driven by the weak yen. The subsidized ¥55,000 model, now 40 percent cheaper than the unrestricted version, reflects targeted spending on a key market long dominated by Nintendo.

GameStop CEO Forgoes $35B Bonus to Pursue eBay Takeover

GameStop has withdrawn Ryan Cohen's potential $35 billion performance bonus so the CEO can concentrate on acquiring eBay. The decision follows eBay's swift rejection of a $55 billion bid in May and precedes the planned release of additional strategic materials this week.
