Sony said PlayStation 5 sell-in was 2.6 million units in the September quarter, down from 4.0 million a year earlier. Adding that figure and the June quarter's 1.6 million to the 93.7 million it reported as of March 31 puts cumulative sell-in at 97.9 million. Sony said it intends to prepare for the next-generation platform.

Sony said PlayStation 5 hardware sell-in was 2.6 million units in the quarter ended September 30, 2026. That is down from 4.0 million units in the year-earlier quarter. The figures are sell-in, meaning units sold into the channel, not sell-through to players.
We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next generation platform.
Cumulative sell-in is 97.9 million if the disclosed pieces are added. Sony's supplemental tables show 93.7 million cumulative PlayStation 5 sell-in units as of March 31, 2026. The company reported 1.6 million units in the June quarter and 2.6 million in the September quarter. Those three figures add to 97.9 million. Sony did not print 97.9 million as its own cumulative line.

The games segment posted a record second-quarter operating profit. Game and Network Services sales were 1,208.5 billion yen in the quarter, up 9% from a year earlier. Operating income was 220.1 billion yen, up 83%, which Sony called a record for the second quarter. Sony raised its full-year sales forecast for the segment to 4,830 billion yen, from 4,540 billion yen, and its operating-income forecast to 700 billion yen, from 660 billion yen.

Sony did not name a PlayStation 6, and it did not say development is on schedule. Chief financial officer Lin Tao said new PlayStation 5 unit sales are gradually declining, as expected at this stage of the console cycle. She said, "We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next generation platform." That is a statement of intent, not a ship date. Sony also said it postponed God of War Laufey to the first quarter of next fiscal year, and that cumulative sales of Marvel's Wolverine, released in September, exceeded 2.4 million units.
