Telstra outage disrupts emergency calls, trains and payments

A software defect at Telstra caused a nationwide outage on July 8 that blocked some emergency calls, suspended regional trains, and disabled EFTPOS terminals for thousands of businesses across Australia. Core network issues are resolved, but transport disruptions continue into July 9. The event reveals critical infrastructure dependence on single telco networks.

A software defect at Telstra triggered a nationwide outage that began around 4:30 a.m. AEST on July 8, 2026, affecting emergency services calls, public transport networks and electronic payment systems across Australia. The telco has declared the core issue resolved, yet transport operators expect disruptions to continue well into July 9.

Emergency calls failed to connect for some users. Australia’s Triple Zero Custodian confirmed that some emergency calls did not connect, a fact also verified by Communications Minister Anika Wells. Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson made two test calls to the service despite government warnings against such actions, which can block genuine callers and carry criminal penalties.

Telstra CFO Michael Ackland stated the company had tested its Triple Zero connections early that morning and found them operational. As of 5:30 p.m. AEST, Telstra completed 395 welfare checks on individuals who attempted emergency calls; six required direct assistance that was coordinated with emergency services, 79 were referred to local police, and 310 confirmed they needed no help.
Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson made two test calls to the service despite government warnings against such actions, which can block genuine callers and carry criminal penalties.

Ackland noted the higher-than-expected volume of checks likely stemmed from test calls and follow-on effects from the outage. He added that backup systems functioned as designed, with some calls routing successfully via TPG or Optus networks on retry. Reuters reports the outage stemmed from a software fault with no evidence of malicious activity.

Public transport networks faced widespread cancellations. Victoria’s V/Line suspended all regional train services, with its status page stating impacts would persist through the night of July 8 and into the morning of July 9. No estimated rectification time has been provided, and passengers are advised to defer travel.

Transport NSW reported ongoing but less extensive disruptions to its regional services. BBC coverage confirms national freight services were also affected. Reuters notes some rural trains in New South Wales were disrupted as well.

Payment systems went offline for thousands of businesses. Taxi drivers were unable to process ride payments, and small businesses including cafes reported failures at point-of-sale terminals. Payments company Tyro confirmed its network was impacted, affecting around 80,000 businesses using its EFTPOS terminals.

The Australian Financial Review reports that a malfunctioning timer in time-keeping servers at two data centers in Sydney and Melbourne caused the fault. Telstra has ruled out any cyberattack.
The company faces potential fines in the tens of millions of dollars.

Telstra leadership responds as regulator scrutiny looms. CEO Vicki Brady cut short an overseas holiday and is returning home, according to the Australian Financial Review. Ackland delivered public updates in her absence. The company faces potential fines in the tens of millions of dollars.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the outage as “deeply concerning.” Telstra says all core network issues have been fixed, but full restoration of dependent services may take additional time.
