Valve delays some Steam Controller reservations until 2027 as demand exceeds manufacturing output. The company updated timelines showing possible shipping by September or December 2026 or into 2027. The device sold out after its May launch and now uses a reservation system. Early feedback calls the hardware strong for PC gaming.

Valve has told customers that reservations for its new Steam Controller may not ship until 2027 as demand continues to outstrip production capacity.

Valve updates reservation timelines on Steam. On June 19, 2026, the company posted an update stating it has no plans to stop making the Steam Controller but must manage expectations given current demand versus manufacturing output by the end of the year. Reservations now display one of three estimated shipping windows: by September 2026, by December 2026, or 2027. The Verge reports that reservations placed on June 20 showed a 2027 window.
The company has acknowledged it underestimated overall demand.

Valve added that the 2027 timeframe is not final and that additional information on specific timing will come later. Customers can check their individual Steam reservation pages for the current estimate.

The controller sold out rapidly after May launch. The $99 device went on sale May 4, 2026, and sold out almost immediately. Kotaku reports that scalper activity prompted Valve to open a reservation system for future restocks rather than allow unlimited immediate purchases. The company has acknowledged it underestimated overall demand.

Production remains constrained despite the controller not being affected by volatile RAM pricing. The source notes printed circuit board prices have spiked amid broader geopolitical tensions, though Valve has not tied the delay directly to any single factor.

Hardware receives positive early feedback. Early coverage describes the second-generation Steam Controller as a strong match for PC gaming on Steam while noting limited compatibility elsewhere. Polygon states the device itself is a solid piece of hardware even as supply struggles persist.

Valve continues to accept new reservations while displaying the extended timelines. No end date has been set for the reservation system, and the company has signaled it will keep producing the controller to address backlog over time.
