Honda and Nissan Agree to Jointly Develop Standardized Vehicle Software and ECUs

Honda and Nissan have formed a new joint development agreement targeting standardized software and electronic control units for next-generation software-defined vehicles.

Honda and Nissan standardize vehicle software and ECUs. The automakers will collaborate on an in-vehicle operating system, key sections of the middleware, and vehicle control software. This effort focuses on unifying multiple electronic control units that form the core of software-defined vehicles.

The pact comes after merger talks between the two companies collapsed last year. Honda and Nissan stated they would keep examining additional ways to cooperate.

First vehicles expected in fiscal 2029. Models equipped with the jointly developed software and ECUs could reach the market in fiscal 2029. That period runs from April 1, 2029 to March 31, 2030.

Partnership aims to cut costs and speed development. Standardizing foundational technologies will allow the companies to draw on their combined engineering expertise and development resources. They said the move will "improve efficiency, accelerate innovation, and enhance competitiveness through reduced development costs and greater economies of scale." The automakers also signaled shorter development cycles required in today's competitive environment.

Infotainment systems likely to share core elements. Future infotainment systems are expected to share many underlying elements because of the common software. Small customizations such as unique graphics could still set Honda and Nissan versions apart.

Broader collaboration and potential Mitsubishi role. Honda and Nissan plan to "continue to explore opportunities for collaboration across a range of areas." The current agreement does not include the wider Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, although Reuters reported that Mitsubishi is considering joining the software and ECU project.
