OpenAI plans to buy Google's AI chips, known as tensor processing units, The Information reported Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the matter. The report did not disclose financial terms, quantities or timing.

OpenAI declined to comment, and Google did not immediately respond to Reuters outside business hours. Neither company has confirmed the plan.

If it goes ahead, the move would deepen ties between two rivals that have increasingly done business: Reuters reported in June 2025 that OpenAI had begun renting Google's chips, and last week OpenAI said it would offer its models through Google Cloud. OpenAI is also one of Nvidia's largest customers and has said it will deploy a first custom chip, designed with Broadcom, by the end of the year.

Alphabet reports quarterly earnings Wednesday.

The Circuitry is a passion project I've always wanted to build, and I love the work behind it.

Running it costs real money. APIs, hosting, time. To keep improving the site and growing this into something useful for everyone, those costs have to be covered.

Any contribution is appreciated. If not, no pressure. Thanks for reading.
