OpenAI will acquire Pierre Computer, a developer tools startup whose technology is already embedded in Codex, the company told Axios.
OpenAI plans to integrate Pierre's Code Storage function into Codex, where Pierre's technology is already in use. Pierre describes Code Storage as a low-latency Git infrastructure layer that lets applications create repositories and push code programmatically.
Financial terms were not disclosed. Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source, according to Axios.
Axios framed the deal as OpenAI joining a growing list of companies challenging GitHub, which is owned by Microsoft, as AI agents take on more coding work. Microsoft owns nearly a quarter of OpenAI, though the two companies also compete in several areas.
Earlier this week, OpenAI detailed Pando, an internal Git backend built to handle the surge of code generated by AI agents, which the company says cut the time needed to push code changes by nearly 80%.

The Circuitry is a passion project I've always wanted to build, and I love the work behind it.
Running it costs real money. APIs, hosting, time. To keep improving the site and growing this into something useful for everyone, those costs have to be covered.
