Sony Records $560M Loss on Bungie Acquisition

Sony records $560 million impairment loss on Bungie acquisition in Q4 FY2025, four weeks after Marathon launch, totaling nearly $765 million yearly from $3.6 billion 2022 purchase. Marathon holds 10,000-15,000 Steam concurrents without top-10 rankings despite praise; Destiny 2 reaches Steam lows. Layoffs continue, CEO changes, more cuts and losses loom.

Sony is recording a $560 million impairment cost for its Bungie acquisition in the fourth quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. The quarter closed just four weeks after the March 5 launch of Marathon, Bungie's first new franchise in over a decade.

The company pointed to recording of impairment losses against Bungie, Inc.’s intangible and other assets to explain the negative factors. These totaled 31.5 billion yen in Q2, 88.6 billion yen in Q4, and 120.1 billion yen for FY25 overall.

Sony recorded a total of nearly $765 million lost for the entire year on the Bungie deal. The company noted the possibility of additional losses from the acquisition in fiscal year 2026.

Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 million in 2022. Marathon has received praise from fans and reviewers but has been unable to stay in the top-10 most played games each week on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC.

Two months after launch, Sony still has not confirmed sales numbers for the extraction shooter or total player counts. It is currently hovering between 10,000 and 15,000 concurrent players on Steam, the platform where it has reportedly sold the majority of its copies.

Destiny 2 is at its lowest point ever on Steam. Bungie has already undergone multiple rounds of mass layoffs following the acquisition and its previous CEO Pete Parsons was replaced. Fans are expecting another potential round of cuts due to expensive overhead and the floundering of its two current live service blockbusters.
Marathon has continued to flirt with more casual-friendly modes to attract newcomers. Momentum for the multiplayer shooter may not shift much in the short term without more aggressive overtures from Sony, which might include cutting the game's $40 price tag or implementing a free trial weekend.

GameStop CEO Forgoes $35B Bonus to Pursue eBay Takeover

GTA 6 to use PS5 DualSense features, confirmed PS5 Pro enhanced

Sony and Rockstar Games have detailed several PS5 hardware features that Grand Theft Auto 6 will use exclusively, while confirming the title is PS5 Pro Enhanced without revealing specifics. Valve Opens SteamOS 3.8 to All PC Hardware

Valve has released SteamOS 3.8, enabling anyone to install the operating system on custom PC hardware to create their own Steam Machine. The update expands compatibility beyond AMD-only setups and brings the console-like experience to desktop builds, though Nvidia support remains in development.
