Sony says it will not sell the PlayStation 6 at a significant loss despite rising component costs. The firm has already raised PS5 prices in some markets and cannot absorb all increases. PS5 sales near 100 million units. This stance points to a higher launch price for the next console.

Sony has declared it will avoid selling next-generation PlayStation consoles at a significant loss despite mounting component expenses and rising anxiety about the eventual PS6 price.

Sony sets principle against major hardware losses. In replies during a Q&A for the Game & Network Services division, the company said "As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. At the same time, we are carefully monitoring the market and continuing to evaluate our approach." Sony added that hardware forms a vital element of the overall gaming experience and that it aims for buyers to appreciate the worth delivered relative to the asking price.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino told the session it is not realistic for the firm to absorb every component cost increase. He pointed out that the company has already enacted some price increases outside Japan. Sales continue according to plan, and Sony does not think the adjustments have reduced customer interest.

Recent price hikes reflect component cost pressures. Sony increased PS5 pricing in April, lifting the standard edition to $649.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99, and the PS5 Pro to $899.99. Officials cited "continued pressures in the global economic landscape." Microsoft revealed its own substantial Xbox price increases last week, set to begin in August.

The persistent RAM and storage shortfall, intensified by the AI boom, has produced sharp cost jumps. These pressures have prompted pricing changes across Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Apple, and additional manufacturers. Industry observers have weighed how the adjustments could shape launch prices for the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix, with some forecasts suggesting four-figure totals.

PS5 sales near 100 million units. Now nearly six years on the market, the PS5 has moved 93.7 million units and is nearing the 100 million milestone. Last month Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki confirmed the company has not fixed a release window or price for the PlayStation 6. Worries remain that Sony and Microsoft could struggle to stock enough units for the holiday season, when demand may be boosted by GTA 6.
Sony has yet to settle on the precise timing or pricing approach for its next-generation platform.
