Apple shares slide about 2% after gross margin forecast misses estimates

Apple shares slid about 2% after the company forecast a gross margin of 45% to 46% for the December quarter, below analyst estimates, citing higher memory costs and Siri AI expenses. A decline would be the third straight quarter of lower margins, despite stronger-than-expected revenue and iPhone results.

Apple shares fell about 2% on Tuesday after the company forecast a December-quarter gross margin of 45% to 46%, below the 46.3% analyst average. Better-than-expected September-quarter results were overshadowed by rising memory costs and Siri AI expenses. A drop from September's 47.9% would be Apple's third straight quarterly margin decline, on CEO John Ternus's first earnings call.

Apple shares slid about 2% on Tuesday after the company forecast a December-quarter gross margin of 45% to 46%, below the 46.3% average analyst estimate compiled by LSEG, according to CNBC.
John Ternus led his first earnings report as CEO.
The forecast overshadowed better-than-expected September-quarter earnings and revenue, including in Apple's core iPhone business. Reuters reported that iPhone sales for the quarter came in at $57.58 billion, above LSEG estimates of $56.54 billion.

CFO Kevan Parekh said the outlook primarily reflects higher memory costs, as well as some costs related to the ramp of Siri AI. Apple's gross margin was 47.9% in the September quarter, down from 50.1% in the June quarter. A further drop in the December quarter would be Apple's third straight quarterly margin decline, CNBC noted.
The September gross margin of 47.9% followed 50.1% in the June quarter.
It was John Ternus's first earnings call as Apple CEO. "What we're seeing with memory pricing right now is unprecedented," Ternus said, adding that Apple expects memory purchase prices to keep rising beyond the December quarter.

Reuters reported that Apple has benefited from memory bought at lower prices, but that advantage is expected to diminish over time as more of its purchases are exposed to higher prices.
