New Siri AI Delayed on EU iPhones Due to DMA
Apple will not launch its new Siri AI features on iPhones and iPads in the European Union alongside the rest of the world. The company directly blames the Digital Markets Act in a press release, stating that iOS 27 and iPadOS users in the EU must wait longer.

Features blocked on iOS and iPadOS in the EU. Impacted features include the new Siri, updated writing tools, Siri mode in the Camera app, and more. Apple has no timeline for when these will become available in the EU.
The EU will not permit the launch until third-party AI providers can offer similar functionality.

Siri AI requires deep access to user data and system functionality. The EU will not permit the launch until third-party AI providers can offer similar functionality.

Apple's privacy and security proposals rejected. While Apple can ensure Siri handles user data in a privacy-preserving way, it cannot guarantee the same for other companies. Apple developed a new layer called Trusted System Agent to coordinate access to sensitive data, but the EU rejected the proposals.

The company has been negotiating with EU regulators for several months without success. This has created an impasse with no current path forward for iOS and iPadOS.
“We’re deeply disappointed that our EU users won’t have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad when we share our new software releases later this year,”

Availability on other Apple platforms unaffected. Siri AI will launch on Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch in the EU. Those platforms are not subject to the same gatekeeper requirements under the DMA.

Apple executive expresses disappointment. “We’re deeply disappointed that our EU users won’t have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad when we share our new software releases later this year,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Our hope is to eventually bring Siri AI to the EU, and we will continue to engage with EU regulators on a path forward. However, their refusal to engage constructively on solutions that preserve privacy and security means we do not currently have a timeline for Siri AI’s availability on iOS and iPadOS in the EU.”
